Walters Gardens

Baptisia DECADENCE® ‘Vanilla Cream’ PPAF CPBRAF (False Indigo)

  • Selected by Walters Gardens, Inc. breeder Hans Hansen for its petite size and unique flowers, this cultivated looking native perennial fits easily into today’s suburban landscapes. Newly emerging spring foliage has a beautiful bronze cast which contrasts nicely with other spring green perennials planted nearby. As the foliage matures, it lightens to grey-green and forms a well-branched, full, rounded clump. Ten inch long spikes of pastel yellow buds open to creamy vanilla colored flowers from late spring into early summer. Seed pods begin to develop immediately after the plant is finished flowering, deepening in color and persisting into fall. This easy care, drought tolerant, deer resistant perennial is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for low maintenance or native perennials.
  • Height: 2 ½-3’ Spread: 3-3 ½’ Zone 4-9 Propagated by cuttings. Asexual propagation prohibited.
  • #1 Grade bare root plants will be available beginning Spring 2015. 72ct plugs available in Early Summer 2015.
  • The roots of this Baptisia series run deep—17 years deep to be exact. What started as a fun botanizing trip in the lower Midwest with a fellow botanist blossomed into a complex hybridizing project for breeder Hans Hansen. For over a decade, Hansen made countless crosses with many native Baptisia species he had collected across Texas and Oklahoma. These crosses resulted in an array of seedlings with unique flower colors and plant habits.
  • Only the very best have made it into the new Decadence™ Series, which includes varieties selected for their desirable flower colors and shorter, more compact habit. Four color strains are currently available with additional varieties coming soon. All members of this series are produced from cuttings rather than from seed, resulting in more uniform finished plants. Others in the series include: Baptisia DECADENCE™ ‘Blueberry Sundae’ PPAF, Baptisia DECADENCE™ ‘Cherries Jubilee’ PPAF, Baptisia DECADENCE™ ‘Lemon Meringue’ PPAF

Hibiscus SUMMERIFIC® ‘Cherry Cheesecake’ PPAF CPBRAF (Rose Mallow)

  • Another gorgeous addition to the popular SUMMERIFIC™ series! This year’s new gal on the block is a compact, well-branched and heavily budded selection that forms an attractive, shrub-like clump of thick, leathery, maple-like, dark green leaves. We’re not sure which are prettier—the creamy pink, magenta kissed flower buds or the white flowers with magenta tipped petals and magenta veining radiating out from the cherry red eye. Huge 7-8” wide flowers have thick, heavily overlapping petals with a ruffled, rumpled texture that helps them hold up better in the summer wind than older selections with thin petals. ‘Cherry Cheesecake’ is the perfect backdrop or centerpiece for sunny borders. It will be the star of the show from late summer into early fall.
  • Height: 4-5’ Spread: 5-6’ Zone: 4-9 Propagated from tissue culture and cuttings. Asexual propagation prohibited. #1 Grade bare root plants and 72ct plugs.
  • Building on the work of respected Hibiscus hybridizers such as the Fleming brothers, Dr. Harold F. Winters and Robert Darby, the hybridizing team at Walters Gardens has been working diligently on developing new hybrids. Only the very best are selected from thousands of seedlings.
  • Others in the Genera include:Hibiscus ‘Midnight Marvel’ PPAF (Rose Mallow), Hibiscus SUMMERIFIC™ var. ‘Cranberry Crush’ PPAF (Rose Mallow), Hibiscus SUMMERIFIC™ ‘Summer Storm’ PP20443 (Rose Mallow)

Monarda ‘Cherry Pops’ PPAF – SUGAR BUZZ™ series (Bee Balm)

  • Cherry red flowers. Height: 20” Spread: 26” Z4-9
  • Monarda SUGAR BUZZ™ series (Bee Balm) This brand new series from the Walters Gardens, Inc. hybridizing program is perfectly suited to the middle of the flower border at 19-24” tall. All four unique colors in this series are similar in size, bloom time, and vigor, making it easy for growers to offer the whole lot. In midsummer, they form a solid dome of color with their 2-2.5” flowers on strong, well-branched stems. The dark green foliage forms an upright clump that will fill out containers nicely but won’t run all over the garden. As with all Monardas from the Walters Gardens, Inc. hybridizing program, these display above average resistance to powdery mildew.
  • Propagated by cuttings. Asexual propagation prohibited.
  • 20ct plugs will be available beginning Spring 2015. 72ct plugs will be available beginning Summer 2014.
  • Others in the Genera include: Monarda ‘Bubblegum Blast’ PPAF – SUGAR BUZZ™ series (Bee Balm), Monarda ‘Grape Gumball’ PPAF – SUGAR BUZZ™ series (Bee Balm), Monarda ‘Lilac Lollipop’ PPAF – SUGAR BUZZ™ series (Bee Balm)

Salvia nemorosa ‘Crystal Blue’ PPAF CPBRAF – Color Spires® Collection (Perennial Salvia)

  • `Crystal Blue’ forms a dense, rounded clump of aromatic, rugose grey-green foliage that looks nice all season long and is not enjoyed by rabbits or deer. ‘Crystal Blue’ Salvia also the first of its kind—an incredibly unique light sky blue (most perennial Salvias are darker purple), a cool shade perfectly fitting for a perennial that blooms relatively early in the season. Though this Salvia does not require vernalization to bloom, plants will be of better quality overall if vernalized before sale.
  • Height: 18-20” Spread: 24-26” Z3-8 Propagated by cuttings. Asexual propagation prohibited.
  • 72ct plugs will be available beginning Summer 2014. #1 Grade bare root plants will be available for shipping beginning Fall 2014.
