History - The Second 50 Years
The Second Fifty Years of the Western's history was written by Harold S. Crawford. Harold was born February 13, 1907 in Bonner Springs, Kansas. His father was connected with Blair Brothers, one of the founding firms of the Western Wholesale Nurserymen's Association in 1890. Crawford's maternal grandfather was aslo a pioneer in Kansas Horticulturist and was in charge of the Kansas Agricultural Exhibit at the St Louis Exposition in 1904.
Crawford graduated from Kansas State University in 1930. That same year he joined the Willis Nursery Company of Ottawa, Kansas as a wholesale salesman. Later he bacame a partner with Arthur Willis and J. J. Pinney. When Mr. Pinney retired in 1964, Crawford became sole owner.
