Join WNLA for our summer train trip to St. Louis on August 10 & 11.  We have a fun and educational two days planned as we celebrate plants with purpose and the ways the St. Louis tour stops are promoting and supporting the many benefits of plants!

We'll meet bright and early on Thursday morning, August 10 at Kansas City's historic Union Station.  Here we'll catch the Missouri River Runner and take the approximately 5 hour Amtrak journey to Kirkwood train station near St. Louis.  The relaxing train ride is a perfect chance to catch up with friends and talk to colleagues.  There will be a snack car on board to purchase snacks or bring breakfast on the train with you.

When we disembark at the historic Kirkwood train station, we'll hop on our bus and head to Missouri Botanical Garden for a private tour with their horticulture staff.  Considered one of the top botanical gardens in the world, the 158 year old Garden is a National Historic Landmark as well as being a center for science, conservation, education and hortiultural display.

Following the afternoon tour at Missouri Botanical Garden, we'll rejoin our bus and head to St. Louis Composting for dinner.  The region's largest compost producer, St. Louis Composting processes roughly 600,000 cubic yards of green material annually - more than one-third of all yard waste generated in St. Louis County!  They're certainly helping to make the world a little greener by reducing landfill waste - while producing quality compost.

Don't forget to pack your sleeping bag!  We're "glamping" at Shaw Nature Reserve.  This 2400+ acre reserve on the Meramec River has replicated prairie, abundant woodlands with native wildflowers, and gorgeous wetlands.  After an evening of socializing (BYOB!), we'll spend the night in their 4 sleeping lodges.  The historic log or post-and-beam lodges feature bunk beds (bring your own sleeping bag or bedding) and air conditioning with a separate shower house.

After an excellent night's sleep, we'll enjoy a continental breakfast followed by a private tour of the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve.  From here we'll travel to Greenscape Gardens to tour a garden center with a mission to make St. Louis County a greener community.  We'll see what they're doing to help the environment through helping gardeners to grow diverse plant materials in an environmentally sustainable way.

After our stop at Greenscape Gardens, we'll travel up to Forrest Keeling Nursery for lunch and a nursery tour.  Specializing in native plant material (over 250 different species!), Forrest Keeling is focused on bringing their conservation expertise to home and farm habitats with their new Habitat Headquarters Collections.

After a tasty lunch at Forrest Keeling, we'll head back to Kirkwood to catch the afternoon Amtrak train back to Kansas City.  Limited dinner options are available from the snack car but those preferring healthier options should pack some snacks.

There are three ticket options available for WNLA's Plants with Purpose Tour.  The first ticket ($120 members / $170 non-members) includes the train ticket, transportation in St. Louis, accomodation & breakfast at Shaw Nature Reserve, dinner at St. Louis Composting, and lunch at Forrest Keeling Nursery.  If the train trip doesn't work for you, meet us in St. Louis!  Use discount code NoTrain to purchase the St. Louis only ticket ($60 members / $110 non-members) that includes transportation in St. Louis, accomodation & breakfast at Shaw Nature Reserve, dinner at St. Louis Composting, and lunch at Forrest Keeling Nursery.  From St. Louis and want to sleep in your own bed?  Use discount code NoTrainNoLodging to select the tours only ticket ($30 members / $80 non-members) that allows you to drive yourself between tour stops and includes only the tour stops, dinner at St. Louis Composting, and lunch at Forrest Keeling Nursery.

The Summer trip is always fun!   From WNLA Bus Trip Participants:

"
Just a note to let you know I think these bus tours and other functions like them are just the ticket to giving value to WNLA membership.  This recent bus tour provided an atmosphere of friendship and networking and education all rolled into one event.  Not too expensive for the membership and in my mind very valuable.  Thanks to the Western and all involved in putting it together!  Roland"

"We enjoyed our time at the Bailey Expo. It was a treat to be invited to the John Bailey residence. Our employees enjoyed touring his yard and the tours on the following day at the Bailey Expo. Our favorite was the Nord Farm tour. My employees loved seeing new plants in the garden.
